Tips for Safely Using a Shower Seat

A shower seat is an easy way to assist in bathing anyone who has limited movement. Following all the basic safety considerations in the shower when using this modern convenience will ensure you are also as safe as you need to be.

Proper Use

Reading through the instructions for your shower seat is just as important for safety as using the chair properly. There are usually height and weight restrictions to consider when using a bath chair. For instance, most chairs support up to 400 pounds. Patients over 400 pounds need to opt for a bariatric chair, instead. A bariatric chair will support up to 700 pounds or more depending on the chair itself.  Choosing the right chair for your weight will also help maintain the chair so that it lasts for a longer period of time.

You also need to be sure that the person using the shower seat has assistance as needed. In some cases, shower chairs are used as a preventative measure among those who are mobile but don’t want to risk a fall. You still need to have a way to reach help, even if you are mobile and using a chair as a preventative device. Bring the phone into the bathroom with you and install non-skid mats on the floor of the bath as an extra prevention against being stuck in the bath because of a fall.

Maintenance

Your shower seat needs to be maintained in order to be safe. Check the screws holding the chair regularly and make sure the chair is completely stable before use. If the chair isn’t level it is much easier to have an accident. If your chair is too wide for the bathtub you are using then check around for a narrower version that fits into your tub well. A bench is also an option if you have an extremely narrow tub.

Cleaning your shower seat is also a good idea. You should clean the chair on the same schedule as cleaning the tub, using mild soap and warm water. The chair will be made with materials that resist mold and mildew but the persistently wet environment may cause some buildup if the chair isn’t cared for properly. Make sure that you use the recommended cleaning materials for your specific chair by checking the manufacturer’s instructions for care and maintenance.

Rolling Chairs

Rolling chairs present other dangers in the bath. For those using a rolling shower seat it is important to make sure that the brake is on before beginning to shower. If you have a walk-in shower you should also make sure the area is clear of debris, such as shampoo bottles, on the floor. A clean floor can allow you to move the chair easily if the water becomes too hot or too cold.

A shower seat is a good tool to have and can actually increase your safety when used properly. With just a little extra time you can use your chair to have the safest bathroom possible.
